Dear Parents and Carers,

On Friday 27th March, Great Bedwyn School will be continuing its tradition of an Easter Bonnet parade through the village, from the school (leaving school at 9am or just after) to St Mary’s Church for our Easter service (9.30am to 10:30am) and then returning (taking in Foxbury Place) after our Church service. Families are very welcome to join us for the service, which will be led by our Year 3 class.
During the walk and the service, the children will be collecting donations for the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity. More information about the work this charity does can be found on their website:
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)
If you are available to accompany the children walking there and back, please let the school office know.
School will finish as normal at 3.15pm on this day.
Children will need to make an Easter Bonnet/Hat at home around the theme of Easter and new life. It can be a traditional Easter Bonnet, or a more modern and adventurous creation. It needs to fit securely on your child’s head and be comfortable for them to wear for a walk throughout the village. It should be safe and not obscure their view! Children will be designing and making this hat at home for this term’s homework. Please contact your child’s class teacher should you require support with resources.
Families and locals can come to their front doors, wave us on from the window, or join in with our parade and attend our Easter service. It would be lovely to have an amazing turn out, and we want to spread a little joy and happiness throughout our community.

From Thursday 16th April – 25th June, Year 3 will have 10 weeks of swimming lessons at Marlborough Leisure Centre. We will leave school at 1pm and return for 3pm. The school minibuses will be used to transport the children both ways. Can you please make sure that your child’s swimming costume and towel are named and placed in a suitable bag, which should also be named.

We do need two parent volunteers to accompany us each week, please email the school office if you are able to help please. You would need to be at school by 1pm to accompany us on the bus.

We ask for a voluntary contribution of £42.50 (£4.25 per child per week) to help towards the cost of transport and lessons. Please give consent and make payment via your MCAS account (you will see it listed under clubs). We would also be grateful if you could complete and submit the online consent form.

Dear Year 1 parents,
Mrs Shuttleworth would like to take Year 1 on a trip to STEAM Museum in Swindon, to complement their history learning, on the Wednesday the 29th April.
This is a full day outing and includes a Brunel discovery session. The children will be transported in the school minibuses, leaving school around 9am and returning at 3pm. Your child will need to wear school uniform and bring a water bottle and snack. Please order a packed lunch with Sue Brady for this day and they’ll deliver it to us in time.
We would like 3 parent volunteers to accompany us on the trip, if you can help please let the school office know, and we will confirm back to you. We will leave school at 9am and be back by 3pm, you can travel on the bus with us.
In order that the trip may take place, it is necessary to ask for a voluntary contribution of £12.40. There is no obligation to contribute, and no student in the group will be omitted from the trip if their parents do not contribute. It is true, however, that the trip will not take place if sufficient voluntary contributions are not forthcoming, as there is no other source of funding for the trip. In case of financial hardship, support may be available and a letter to the Principal will be dealt with confidentially and sympathetically.

We have planned a range of exciting music opportunities taking place both in school and at the Newbury Corn Exchange for term 5.

All children will be able to experience a range of musical concerts and workshops which will be held at school and St Mary’s Church, Great Bedwyn, during the school day. Some classes will also have the opportunity to attend an open rehearsal style concert at the Newbury Corn Exchange as part of the Spring Music Festival. The Newbury Spring Festival will see classes attend a range of performances. We are thrilled to be able to plan so many musical opportunities for our children as so many are aspiring musicians already.

Please find further details below about the performances we have planned. Via your MCAS account, please give consent for your child to travel off site for the Newbury Spring Festival and pay the £6.15 which will cover the coach travel and performance at Newbury Corn Exchange.

In order that these events may take place, it is necessary to ask for a voluntary contribution. There is no obligation to contribute, and no student in the group will be omitted from the trip if their parents do not contribute. 5th June, 2026 – Jamie Cochrane – An internationally recognised classical pianist and previous winner of Young Musician of the Year, Jamie studied at the Royal Academy of Music and is most recently the 2024 winner of the Norah Sande Award.

10th July, 2026 – Paddington Trio – An ensemble of piano, violin and cello, known for their energetic and accessible performances.

Performances and workshop at St Mary’s Church, Great Bedwyn (for all year groups):

8th May, 2026 – Music for Awhile – Harpsichord – An ensemble that blends classical, baroque and contemporary music in imaginative performances. We will walk to the church for this performance, leaving the school at 2.10pm. We do need parents from all classes to walk down with us, please let the office know if you can help. Children will not be returning to school after the church so should be collected from the church at 3.15pm (this performance is not open to parents unless you are walking with us). School buses and the Shalbourne bus will pick up from the church. If your child brings a packed lunch to school please provide this in a disposable paper bag, so there are no lunch boxes to take to the church.

20th May, 2026 – Benedetti foundation – school musical workshop. We will walk to the church for this workshop, leaving the school at 10.40am. We do need parents from all classes to walk down with us (and back with us at 12.10pm), please let the school office know if you can help. We will return to school for a late lunch.

Visits to the Newbury Spring Festival:

12th May, 2026 – Year 1 and 2 will be visiting Newbury Corn Exchange to watch RANT, a Scottish folk group. We will travel to Newbury on a coach, leaving school at 1pm and returning at 3.30pm. We do need 4 parent helpers to accompany us please, but actually have enough space on the coach and tickets for up to 10 parents, if you can/would like to join us please let the office know.

14th May, 2026 – Year 4 and 5 will be visiting Newbury Corn Exchange to watch Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta. We will travel to Newbury on a coach, leaving school at 12noon and returning at 3pm. Children will need to take a pack lunch with them, in a disposable paper bag. We do need 1 parent helper to accompany us please, but actually have enough space on the coach and tickets for up to 9 parents, if you can/would like to join us, please let the office know.

5th June, 2026 – Jamie Cochrane – An internationally recognised classical pianist and previous winner of Young Musician of the Year, Jamie studied at the Royal Academy of Music and is most recently the 2024 winner of the Norah Sande Award.

10th July, 2026 – Paddington Trio – An ensemble of piano, violin and cello, known for their energetic and accessible performances.

Performances and workshop at St Mary’s Church, Great Bedwyn (for all year groups):

8th May, 2026 – Music for Awhile – Harpsichord – An ensemble that blends classical, baroque and contemporary music in imaginative performances. We will walk to the church for this performance, leaving the school at 2.10pm. We do need parents from all classes to walk down with us, please let the office know if you can help. Children will not be returning to school after the church so should be collected from the church at 3.15pm (this performance is not open to parents unless you are walking with us). School buses and the Shalbourne bus will pick up from the church. If your child brings a packed lunch to school please provide this in a disposable paper bag, so there are no lunch boxes to take to the church.

20th May, 2026 – Benedetti foundation – school musical workshop. We will walk to the church for this workshop, leaving the school at 10.40am. We do need parents from all classes to walk down with us (and back with us at 12.10pm), please let the school office know if you can help. We will return to school for a late lunch.

12th May, 2026 – Year 1 and 2 will be visiting Newbury Corn Exchange to watch RANT, a Scottish folk group. We will travel to Newbury on a coach, leaving school at 1pm and returning at 3.30pm. We do need 4 parent helpers to accompany us please, but actually have enough space on the coach and tickets for up to 10 parents, if you can/would like to join us please let the office know.

14th May, 2026 – Year 4 and 5 will be visiting Newbury Corn Exchange to watch Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta. We will travel to Newbury on a coach, leaving school at 12noon and returning at 3pm. Children will need to take a pack lunch with them, in a disposable paper bag. We do need 1 parent helper to accompany us please, but actually have enough space on the coach and tickets for up to 9 parents, if you can/would like to join us, please let the office know.

SWIMMING

From Thursday 16th April – 25th June, Year 3 will have 10 weeks of swimming lessons at Marlborough Leisure Centre. We will leave school at 1pm and return for 3pm. The school minibuses will be used to transport the children both ways. Can you please make sure that your child’s swimming costume and towel are named and placed in a suitable bag, which should also be named.

We do need two parent volunteers to accompany us each week, please email the school office if you are able to help please. You would need to be at school by 1pm to accompany us on the bus.

We ask for a voluntary contribution of £42.50 (£4.25 per child per week) to help towards the cost of transport and lessons. Please give consent and make payment via your MCAS account (you will see it listed under clubs). We would also be grateful if you could complete and submit the online consent form, using the link below:

On this second visit children and parents will have the opportunity to meet our Forest School lead for the afternoon. We will spend the afternoon outside for a Forest Schools stay and play. Each child should be accompanied by one parent or carer. Children should bring a water bottle, wear clothes suitable for forest play, wear long trousers, a long-sleeved top and wear trainers (children must have arms and legs covered).
