Music
Intent
Our aim is to instill a lifelong love of music. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop their musical potential and we aim to nurture and develop this during their time in school. Through their music learning, we aim to increase the child’s self-confidence, ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and to give them a sense of achievement.
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” Plato
Implementation
We are guided by Charanga’s Music Curriculum which allows the children to sing, play tuned and untuned instruments, listen to recorded and live music and compose and improvise using the interrelated dimensions of music. They learn about music history and explore a range of musical styles and traditions, while using and understanding staff and other notations.
All children learn an instrument or explore musical apps, and all children are given the opportunity to learn musical instruments in school. This is further supported by a number of peripatetic teachers that offer a range of musical instruments to complement the school’s curriculum.
Performances, hymn practice and Collective Acts of Worship during the school year are an enjoyable and important element of our music curriculum and we work closely with the local church and the community to share the joy of performing together and for worship. In addition, we have a thriving Key Stage 2 choir that performs to the school and the wider community.
Impact
Children will know more and remember more due to the repetitivenature of the music curriculumtaught over the life of their school journey. The introduction of key knowledge, including vocabulary, is underpinned with disciplinary knowledge. The combined approach ensures all children can build upon prior knowledge, strengthening their understanding and enabling them to make informed choices. Performances, presentations, low threat quizzes and pupil voice capture the enjoyment, musicality and broad understanding of music as they continue their learning journey at Great Bedwyn CE School.
