Geography
Our geography teaching is based on the National Curriculum objectives and Early Years Framework. Blocked learning twice a year ensures that each year group is taught key concepts over the learning journey from Year 1 through to Year 6 which develops children’s learning in a systematic and progressive way, enabling children to build on prior knowledge and experiences. The curriculum is mapped across Key Stages and into Key Stage 3 ensuring that learning is continuous into the next phase.
Although we teach Geography as a specific subject area, we also recognise the links within other subjects and how learning can be embedded and enriched across the curriculum and the wider life of the School. There are many links made to Geography in Collective Act of Worship (CAW), PSHRSEE, Music, History, RE and Science. The curriculum enables children to celebrate diversity and has strong links to British Values.
Our Geography curriculum is enriched further with children’s participation in Eco and Sustainability projects, Forest Schools and our Learning Beyond the Curriculum initiatives. All pupils use the locality to enrich their learning experiences, and there are strong links with the local and global community.
At Great Bedwyn the children are heavily invested into the Chumvi club, Kids Tusk Force, UK which is a conservation charity run by the Sheldrik Trust. Upper Key Stage 2 pupils learn more about conservation and work with the charity to raise awareness.
“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents.” Barack Obama
