Sunflowers for Ukraine

Sunflowers For Ukraine

We are making little paper sunflowers to raise funds to benefit the Red Cross Emergency Fund in Ukraine and bordering countries.

We think our sunflowers (the national flower of Ukraine) represent a symbol of our love and support for a democratic nation of people who are facing desperation, uncertainty – and tragic circumstances we can only imagine.

By purchasing one of our sunny little flowers you will help bring aid where it is needed – and a hand of friendship.

Great Bedwyn’s resident artist, June Pearson, and her grandson Tom (Year 6) organised and made sunflowers with all pupils in the school which they have sold for a minimum donation of 50p. Their idea grew wings and was shared with MAT and cluster schools.  The sale was publicised on social media and radio and was supported by the wider community and the local MP Danny Kreuger, who wore a Bedwyn sunflower to Prime Ministers Question time.  All donations received have been given to the Red Cross with the overall total to date at Great Bedwyn CE school standing at £1200.

Participating schools, so far:

  • Great Bedwyn CE School (where the seed was planted)
  • Marlborough St. Mary’s
  • Easton Royal Academy
  • Hungerford Primary School
  • Woodborough Primary School
  • Preshute Primary School
  • Five Islands Academy, Isles of Scilly

Tom and Amelie from Year 6 and Fiona de Pass were interviewed on BBC Wiltshire on 9th March to talk about the sunflower appeal.  The recording can be heard via the link below, at about 3:50 into the programme.  You may need the BBC Sounds app to listen, or a BBC login if accessing the link on a PC.
